August 1st marked a major milestone for The Heart of Hospice – the start of year 4. There weren’t any parades or banners hanging anywhere. No greeting cards were written especially for the day. No candles or air horns, and definitely not a day off from work to celebrate.
All the same, it was 100% worth celebrating. And we did celebrate, in true THOH fashion. We recalled the people who share our work in hospice and those who have cheered us on. Over a healthy lunch, we were amazed at the opportunities we’ve been given to connect with people that amaze us every day. (Thank you, Helen Haddick and Barbara Karnes, and so many more!)
Practicing healthy self care is vital to maintaining longevity in a career focused on end of life care. You’ll never maintain the quality of your patient care and your own life if you neglect self care habits. Gratitude is the perfect way to do this.

Make a gratitude list daily. Tell those important people at home and at work that you’re grateful for them. Recognize the smallest moments that provide you with peace and comfort. Be grateful for the hard stuff that pulls out every gift you possess. Be thankful for things as simple as breath and heartbeat.
Jerry and I are grateful every day for those of you who listen to the podcast, read the blog, and follow us on social media. Don’t stop – we love connecting with you! Year 3 brought growth in leaps and bounds. Year 4 will bring its own adventures.
And we’ll be grateful for all of it.
No matter who you are, or where you are in your hospice journey, we’re grateful that you’re part of The Heart of Hospice.
